A Happy Tail for Railway Rescue Dog Annie

A German Shepherd dog which was rescued from train tracks by staff at Jerry Green Dog Rescue has found a new home.

Annie will be moving into her new home in Hull with Kay Meens who has three children and works at a local school.

Staff at the East Yorkshire centre in Gilberdyke managed to coax the vulnerable dog from the Hull to Goole railway line minutes before the next train was due.

The successful rescue attempt came after numerous attempts to entice the stray dog out of the cold and wet weather in January.

Once she arrived at the centre staff named her Annie before helping her to gain weight, clean up her coat and socialise her with other dogs and people.

“I used to have a black Labrador and my parents had a German Shepherd so we’ve always had dogs,” said Kay, who was paired with Annie through the charity’s Meet & Match scheme.

“I read about Annie’s story in the paper and was interested in taking her on. I called the centre and arrange to meet her – she has a lovely nature and she is such a good-looking dog.”

Denise Browne, Deputy Manager at Jerry Green Dog Rescue in East Yorkshire, said: “Everyone at the centre is really happy that Annie has found a new home, especially given what she has been through.

“She was very thin with matted hair all over her body and a limp when she arrived at the centre but now she has put on weight, has a shiny coat and looks beautiful. You wouldn’t think that she was nine years old.

“All our dogs go through the Meet & Match scheme which means they meet their potential owners a few times in a relaxed environment, away from the kennels before being adopted. We’re sad to see her go but it was clear that Annie and Mrs Meens are perfect for each other.”

Annie is a nine year old sable long-haired German Shepherd dog. Read the previous press release about her rescue here.

Notes to editors:

Jerry Green Dog Rescue was founded in 1961 in Broughton, Lincolnshire and is now one of the UK’s largest dog rescue charities. It has rescue centres in five locations:

• Gilberdyke, East Yorkshire
• Blidworth near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire
• Broughton near Brigg, North Lincolnshire
• Algarkirk near Boston, Lincolnshire
• Thirsk, North Yorkshire

Jerry Green Dog Rescue has a caring ethos which puts the dogs in its care at the centre of everything it does. It also operates a policy whereby prospective adopters are introduced to dogs in a neutral environment away from the kennel, resulting in less stress for the dog and increasing the chances of permanent homes being found.

The adoption process at Jerry Green Dog Rescue involves a number of introductory visits and the rehoming team provide pre and post adoption support to ensure the move to the dog’s new home is as smooth as possible.

The charity receives no Government or National Lottery funding. This means it is dependent on the generosity of public and corporate donors/sponsors.
