BGU graduates are top of the league when it comes to getting a job a year after graduating

BGU Graduates Top the Table for Employability

Graduates from Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln are more likely to be in work or further study a year after finishing their course than graduates from any other university in England.

New data released by the Department for Education show that 87.6 per cent of students who graduated from BGU in 2012-13 were either employed or continuing their education a year later.

The figure is the highest of any English university, and the best of any higher education provider with the exception of St George’s Hospital Medical School in London where the figure is 87.7 per cent.

The national average for England is 82 per cent. The data relate to students who graduated in 2012-13 – the most recent year for which records are available.

BGU has finished top or joint top in eight of the past 10 years for employability and further study one year after graduation, and always in the top five.

The university has maintained this performance when considering students’ destinations three years and five years after graduation: BGU has ranked first or second for the past eight years where there is complete data.

The Reverend Canon Professor Peter Neil, Vice Chancellor of Bishop Grosseteste University, expressed delight at the latest figures.

“This is fantastic news for our graduates and for the university as a whole,” said Professor Neil. “It highlights how well our students fare after graduating, and to see BGU top of the list of English universities is evidence that we equip students for the job market.

“A university education is not simply an academic training, but also a preparation for the world of work. Here at BGU we work very hard to ensure that our degree courses are career-focused, and most of them incorporate a professional work placement during the period of study.

“No other higher education institution can match our level of sustained performance over eight years, and we are particularly pleased to have broadened our academic portfolio in recent years while maintaining the outstanding employability record of our graduates.”

Another measure of graduate success in the workplace is the annual Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey published in the summer by HESA, the Higher Education Statistics Agency.

This year’s DLHE survey ranked Bishop Grosseteste University third among UK universities for employability, with 97.2% per cent of graduates in work or further study six months following graduation (2014/15).
