The tank was first developed in Lincoln in 1916

BGU to Hit the Right Note at Lincoln 2016 Celebrations

Next month Lincoln will celebrate the centenary of the production of the first tank – and Bishop Grosseteste University will be playing its part in the commemorations.

On Sunday 17th July, as part of two weeks of citywide festivities, BGU will welcome John Kirkpatrick, star of the BBC television series Victorian Farm, who will be performing his Tunes from the Trenches show.

A singer, dancer and instrumentalist, John will present a full kitbag of songs from the two world wars.

As well as singing some of the most popular songs of the period, John will also give an airing to some of the songs sung on the front line by the service personnel themselves – tunes that were on everyone’s lips but wedded to new words.

The performance starts at 7.30pm at The Venue at BGU. Tickets cost £11.74 each and can be booked via Eventbrite: www.johnkirkpatrick.eventbrite.co.uk.

Earlier that same weekend the Bishop Grosseteste Community Choir will be singing during Green Fields Beyond, a huge outdoor spectacular about the development of the tank to be staged at Lincoln Castle.

Hundreds of actors and participants will line the streets of Lincoln, leading parades and outdoor promenades on from Lincoln Castle, down Steep Hill to Lincoln’s High Street and back again.

The day will culminate in a major outdoor arts performance at the castle remembering the Lincolnshire men and women who worked tirelessly to build the top secret ‘Water Tank for Mesopotamia’.

The performances on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th July will feature light projection, War Horse style puppetry and new music specially commissioned for the show by award-winning composer Nick Bicat.

It’s great for the university to be able to get involved with the celebrations,” said Annie Walker, Community Music Co-ordinator at BGU. “Not only are we hosting our own event on campus, but we will also be showcasing the talents of our community choir at one of the biggest events in the Lincoln calendar.”

The choir is seeking singers of any ability and is inviting anyone who would like to get involved to attend rehearsals in the run-up to the production.

In these sessions Annie Walker will walk volunteers through the musical pieces that will feature in the performance.
