Call for Volunteers to Take the Lead

Are you a dog lover and have a few hours a week to spare? Then a leading dog rescue charity wants to hear from you!

Jerry Green Dog Rescue is calling on supporters to get involved at their local rescue centre in the run up to Volunteers’ Week, which takes place from 1st to 7th June 2015.

Jenny Harris, fund raiser at Jerry Green Dog Rescue, said: “We rely heavily on the outstanding contribution of our volunteers throughout the year. National Volunteer Week is a great opportunity for people to give some of their time to a good cause.

“Volunteering with Jerry Green provides an opportunity for people to make new friends and gain additional skills and the satisfaction of knowing they’re making a difference to the lives of dogs in need.”

Volunteers’ Week is an annual event which celebrates the contribution made by millions of volunteers across the UK. From showcasing the different volunteering roles on offer, taster sessions and team challenges with new partners, to volunteer recruitment events, awards ceremonies and launching new volunteering campaigns, events take place throughout the country.

The charity has five centres across the region, including Thirsk in North Yorkshire, Blidworth in Nottinghamshire, Gilberdyke in East Yorkshire, Broughton in North Lincolnshire and Algarkirk in Lincolnshire, and aims to find forever homes for more than 800 dogs every year.

There are a number of dedicated volunteers at each centre, but the charity is still in need of additional support. Opportunities on offer include office volunteers, dog care volunteers and community volunteers.

Lydia Cawsey, a volunteer at Jerry Green Dog Rescue, said: “Becoming a volunteer has been so rewarding, everyone has been really friendly and I have gained some great new skills.”

As part of her Business Administration and Accounting course at North Lindsey College, Lydia needed to gain experience in the workplace.

“I wanted to give my time to a worthwhile organisation and Jerry Green Dog Rescue seemed like the perfect place,” said Lydia. “I started off as an office volunteer but now feel confident enough to take up the role as a dog care volunteer.

“I believe that the diverse experience I’ve received as a volunteer at Jerry Green will look great on my CV when I start applying for jobs once my course is complete.”

Volunteers will be provided with a full induction and ongoing training within their chosen role.

With operating costs of £1.5 million, the continual support of staff and volunteers helps the charity address the needs of the dogs in its care, as well as the supporters who offer dogs loving and permanent homes.

Notes to editors:

Jerry Green Dog Rescue was founded in 1961 in Broughton, Lincolnshire and is now one of the UK’s largest dog rescue charities.
• Jerry Green Dog Rescue has a caring ethos which puts the dogs in its care at the centre of everything it does. It also operates a policy whereby prospective adopters are introduced to dogs in a neutral environment away from the kennel, resulting in less stress for the dog and increasing the chances of permanent homes being found.
• The adoption process at Jerry Green Dog Rescue involves a number of introductory visits and the rehoming team provide pre and post adoption support to ensure the move to the dog’s new home is as smooth as possible.
• The charity receives no Government or National Lottery funding. This means it is dependent on the generosity of public and corporate donors/sponsors.
