Greater Lincolnshire LEP

Export Week to Boost International Trade

With Export Week about to kick off (10th to 14th November) East Midlands export chief Ian Harrison has called on Greater Lincolnshire businesses to seek help from UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) to realise their export potential.

He made the call as new research revealed the top three barriers preventing Lincolnshire companies from exporting: finding the additional management time, establishing dialogue with prospective customers and global issues or competition.

The good news is that 14% of companies in the East Midlands are exporting, and a further 2% would like to. The research also revealed that 58% of exporters in the area are expecting their overseas sales increase over the next 12 months.

“UKTI is keen to offer support so companies can overcome barriers to international trade,” said Ian, who is Regional Director for UKTI East Midlands.

“This Export Week we want to ensure that those companies that want to export can, by taking full advantage of the support available from UKTI.

“We are bringing the world to the region next week and we hope that the expertise and advice available at events will help put businesses on the fast track to exporting success.”

Export Week is organised by UKTI in conjunction with partners and business organisations. It aims to encourage companies to take up the export challenge and highlight the support and knowledge available to help them grow.

Since April this year nearly £600 million worth of new business has been won by East Midlands businesses assisted by UKTI. [Updated statistic 10/11/14]

Ruth Carver, Director of the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership, said: “In a global economy, exporting is an important driver of business growth.

“Since 2009 the percentage of Greater Lincolnshire businesses which are exporting has grown from 18% to 22%. This puts our region ahead of the game in the East Midlands, where the average is 14%, and our aim is to support and encourage further growth in this area.

“Our strengths in manufacturing and agri-food give us a head start when it comes to exporting, but we must not rest on our laurels. Given the lack of official data on exporting this UKTI survey report will help us to understand and effectively address the issues involved.”
