Fennies Celebrates Olympics in Style

Fennies children’s nurseries in Beckenham, Bromley, Croydon, Horley, Epsom, Purley and Sanderstead are showing their support for teams from around the world competing at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Throughout August, more than 1,000 children from across the Fennies group are taking part in a range of activities to celebrate Rio 2016.

Vikky Rose, Deputy Manager of Fennies’ nursery on Addiscombe Road in Croydon said each nursery has adopted a different country to support.

“Several members of our staff and children are of Jamaican origin,” she explained, “and to celebrate their heritage and learn more about their culture we’ve adopted Jamaica as our country.

“We’ve already held a Jamaica-themed opening ceremony and the children enjoyed dressing up in the colours of the country’s flag and making torches and shakers in preparation for our opening ceremony parade around the garden.

“The children and staff are really looking forward to the other Olympic-themed activities we have planned which will culminate in a Rio carnival with a Jamaican twist.

“We have plenty of parents who will be involved in making costumes for the carnival which will include dancing and a tea party. There will also be a parade so we can see all of the beautiful costumes with a prize for the most original design.”

Each nursery has been preparing for the Olympic Games in different ways.

The children at the Albert Road, Horley nursery have making their own Olympic rings and decorated their trays, which they keep all of their belongings in, in red, white and green to represent the Madagascan flag. They’ve also taken part in balloon tennis matches and a space hopper race.

At Beech House in Sanderstead, the children have been doing mini-javelin and long jump events as well as competing in bike races. Meanwhile the Blyth Road nursery in Bromley has chosen to adopt Italy as its home nation and celebrated by making necklaces from pasta in the Italian flag colours of red, white and green.

Youngsters at Fennies’ nursery in Purley have been enjoying some red, white and blue-themed activities showing their support for team USA. They’ve been busy making their own American flags as well as creating an American diner, where they dressed up as waiters and danced to American-themed music. Each group of children made a different coloured ring to form the ‘United States of Purley’.

In Epsom, the Fennies nursery on Hook Road held its own opening ceremony and the children made Olympic torches and painted some Olympic rings.

In Beckenham, the children showed their support for Team GB by making their own Union Jack flags and hosted their own opening ceremony, while at St Augustine’s Avenue in South Croydon the staff and children held a garden party where they danced to carnival music and wore Rio-themed feather hats.

Vikky added: “Our aim is to help the children celebrate and learn more about a variety of cultures during the Olympic Games this August. It’s also an opportunity to get them up and active and understand the importance of staying fit and healthy not just now but throughout their lives.”
