Lincoln Charity to Sleep Rough Against Homelessness

Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to be homeless? Lincolnshire YMCA is inviting the public to experience sleeping rough for one night.

The charity is asking people to camp out in the grounds of Lincoln Cathedral to raise funds in support of its dedicated service to provide shelter for people sleeping rough in the city.

The Sleep Easy event will start at 7pm on Friday 6th March and finish at 7am the following morning.

Last year’s event attracted almost 100 participants and raised £8,000. The money was used to provide Lincolnshire YMCA service users with a £50 voucher redeemable at the Nomad Trust charity shop on Sincil Street to support them with home essentials as they move on to independent living.

Mark Hills, event co-ordinator and Deputy Chief Executive of Lincolnshire YMCA, is hopeful that this year’s Sleep Easy will be just as successful.

“The Sleep Easy event is a great opportunity for the Lincoln community to come together and show their support physically and financially for an issue that really affects our city.

“Homelessness is a serious problem within our community. The issue is deeper than the people sleeping rough on the streets of Lincolnshire every night; there are also many people who are secretly homeless or are sofa surfing.

“We’re working extremely hard at Lincolnshire YMCA and the Nomad Trust to tackle this issue, and all the funds raised at this year’s Sleep Easy will be assigned to the project.”

In previous years the Sleep Easy has also attracted participation and support from local politicians including Karl McCartney MP.

“We are grateful to those who have come along to take part in the event in previous years and I’m sure that we will gain even more support and raise more money than we did last year,” continued Mark.

Cardboard boxes sponsored by Spaldings Ltd and hot drinks sponsored by Stokes will be available during the event. Those taking part will also receive a free breakfast in the morning.

To register to take part or make a donation please visit the Sleep Easy section on  www.lincsymca.co.uk. The registration fee is £10 for adults and £5 for people between the ages of 11 and 18. Participants must be aged 11 or over, and those under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult at all times during the event.
