Pupils Start Day Properly Thanks to Breakfast Club

More children are now getting a healthy breakfast before they start their school day thanks to Duncan & Toplis.

The leading East Midlands firm of chartered accountants and business advisers has joined other Lincolnshire businesses in offering financial support to the Lincolnshire Businesses for Breakfast charity.

The project was set up by Business in the Community to help sustain out-of-hours breakfast clubs in primary schools in Lincoln and Gainsborough.

Seventeen schools and breakfast clubs are now supported by the charity which helps to ensure that primary school children in Lincolnshire have access to a healthy breakfast each morning.

“Many primary school pupils would not get a breakfast unless these breakfast clubs were available and we know how important it is for their health and ability to learn,” said Shona Welberry, Senior Corporate Adviser at Business in the Community.

“Indeed we also know that, for a few, this is often the only square meal they get each day.

“Lincolnshire Businesses for Breakfast helps to fund out-of-hours primary school breakfast clubs by providing free food. These free or highly subsidised healthy breakfasts are proven to help the pupils’ concentration, attendance and social interaction, thereby raising educational attainment.

“The scheme also provides a number of other benefits such as integrating families with the schools and helping to educate children about the benefits of a healthy diet and nutrition.”

Tim Godson, a Director at Duncan & Toplis, said: “A good breakfast is really important for children who are about to spend a day studying hard in school.

“Breakfast clubs encourage healthy eating and better social interaction and they’re especially important in disadvantaged areas where some children wouldn’t otherwise get a breakfast at all before starting school.

“As a long-established Lincolnshire business we believe strongly in the importance of giving back to the local community and we hope that this partnership will be a long and fruitful one.”

Kate Rouse, Head Teacher at Bishop King School in Lincoln, said the club at her school was an extremely valuable resource for the local community.

“This isn’t a luxury or a way of providing free childcare for our parents – there’s a real deprivation need in this area,” she explained.

“For a variety of reasons many of our children benefit from being in school earlier. Around 30 children use the club every day and we’ve been running it for the last four years.

“As a school we couldn’t afford to run this scheme without support from these generous businesses.”

One firm which has supported the Businesses for Breakfast initiative for the last eight years is Andrew & Co LLP.

“We can see that this scheme is of tremendous value to families and children living in our community and we hope that the small part we play in this scheme makes a real difference in children’s lives,” said Chris Brown, Business Development Manager at Andrew & Co LLP.

Lincolnshire Businesses for Breakfast currently supports 10 breakfast clubs in Gainsborough and 17 in Lincoln.

Lincolnshire Co-operative, Cargill plc and Ping are some of the other businesses which support Lincolnshire Businesses for Breakfast along with Business in the Community and Lincolnshire County Council.
