Thumbs Up for ‘Green’ Dog Rescue Charity

A dog rescue centre in Mansfield has been recognised for its efforts to help save the planet at the Nottingham Post Environment Awards.

On Thursday 22nd October two members of staff and a volunteer from Jerry Green Dog Rescue joined 180 guests for the award ceremony hosted at the Nottingham Belfry hotel.

During the celebrations the dog rescue charity’s centre in Blidworth near Mansfield, was announced as the runner-up in the Environmental Development category for its recently re-opened eco-friendly building.

Following 26 years of heavy use, the dog rescue centre had fallen into disrepair and no longer met modern welfare standards. Fortunately, the charity recognised the long-term benefits of putting energy-saving features in place early in the planning process.

Deputy Manager Sapphire McInnes said: “The new centre boasts solar panels and a biomass boiler, which will help it run in a much more eco-friendly way, reducing heating costs and keeping the space warm in winter and cool in summer.

“Additional energy collected from the biomass boiler will be sold back to the supplier and the profits will be ploughed back in to the centre’s reserves.”

In the summer of 2014, during the building process, Paul Morgan, Site Manager for Williams Homes Ltd, and his team managed to recycle almost 800 tonnes of material from the old centre to make the road base and building foundations for the new site.

This significant level of recycling meant a reduction in waste and limited carbon emissions from lorry transportation, as the materials were not being moved off site.

Martina Martin, Jerry Green Dog Rescue Centre Manager, said: “We were delighted to be shortlisted in the Environmental Development category of the awards, and to be named runner-up was an added bonus.

“We have created a sustainable and cost-effective rescue centre which will provide a secure stay for dogs as we look for their forever homes for many years to come.”

The facility features high-specification and welfare-friendly accommodation for 27 dogs, including an intake block, spacious training barn, office space for staff and a new reception area.

The brand new eco-friendly centre officially opened its doors on Sunday 23rd August 2015.
