Bank Holiday Fun Dog Show at Newstead Abbey

Newstead Abbey and Historical Gardens in Nottinghamshire is set to host a Fun Dog Show and Craft Fair to help raise funds to ensure rescue dogs find a loving home.

Newstead Abbey will welcome pets and their owners on 1st and 2nd May 2016, during the spring bank holiday, in aid of Jerry Green Dog Rescue.

The popular attraction, once home to the notorious poet Lord Byron, will open its gates from 11am to 4pm and host a fun dog show and a number of craft stalls within its grounds.

The Jerry Green Fun Dog Show will feature 11 different classes including Most Handsome Chap, Loveliest Lady, Best Conditioned, Most Like Its Owner and Best Rescue Dog.

Jenny Harris, fundraiser at Jerry Green Dog Rescue, said: “We are delighted to have been invited back to Newstead Abbey this year, this time to host our Fun Dog Show and Craft Fair!

“We’re thankful to the team at Newstead Abbey who are keen to champion our charity and it means even more because we’re able to raise funds while we’re here.

“We know how much Byron loved his four-legged companions, Boatswain and Lyon, and we hope that visitors to Newstead Abbey will enjoy the bank holiday event and get involved in the show.”

Registration for the dog show will open at 11am and the first class will commence at midday. The final class of the day will begin at 3.20pm. The cost for entering is £2 per dog per class and all proceeds will go to the dog rescue charity.

Jenny added: “The dog show is open to all so whether you’re a novice or an experienced hand at dog shows, come along and see if your dog has what it takes to be crowned best in show.”

Visitors of a crafty nature can enjoy more than 20 stalls set within the cloisters, which will showcase a number of skills and artistic forms.

Refreshments will be available throughout the day at Newstead Abbey’s Café in the Courtyard and the newly opened Willow Tree.

The animal theme will continue with a Birds of Prey demonstration by Go Active Limited which will take place on the front lawn.

The event is free and open to all but the usual car parking charges apply.

With operating costs of £1.5 million and five centres across the region, the support of dog lovers is invaluable to help Jerry Green Dog Rescue continue to rescue and re-home dogs.

Notes to editors:

Jerry Green Dog Rescue was founded in 1961 in Broughton, Lincolnshire and is now one of the UK’s largest dog rescue charities.
• Jerry Green Dog Rescue has a caring ethos which puts the dogs in its care at the centre of everything it does. It also operates a policy whereby prospective adopters are introduced to dogs in a neutral environment away from the kennel, resulting in less stress for the dog and increasing the chances of permanent homes being found.
• The adoption process at Jerry Green Dog Rescue involves a number of introductory visits and the rehoming team provide pre and post adoption support to ensure the move to the dog’s new home is as smooth as possible.
• The charity receives no Government or National Lottery funding. This means it is dependent on the generosity of public and corporate donors/sponsors.
