Brew Up and Help a Pup at Newstead Abbey

Newstead Abbey and Historical Gardens in Nottinghamshire is set to host a week-long event to raise funds to ensure dogs find a loving and permanent home.

The Jerry Green Dog Rescue Brew Up, Help a Pup campaign will be supported by visitors to Newstead Abbey from 25th to 29th May 2015, during its Man’s Best Friend event.

The popular attraction, once home to the notorious poet Lord Byron, will open its gates from 10am with an activity trail for families and dog walkers to enjoy.  The trail celebrates Byron’s four-legged friends, Boatswain and Lyon, and will cost £1 to enter with a prize for the winner.

Visitors can donate to the Brew Up, Help a Pup campaign when they visit the café, where a donation box and information leaflets will be available.  Entry to the grounds is free, but car parking will cost £6 per vehicle.

The week will begin with a fun dog show on Sunday 24th May 2015, hosted by Jerry Green Dog Rescue within the grounds. The event will run from 11.30am to 4pm and will showcase 13 different classes, including Junior Jerry’s: Child Handler, Best Veteran (eight years plus), Coolest Pup (up to one year) and Best Family of Dogs (two or more).

Entries will be taken on the day and cost £1 per dog, per class. Judging will begin at midday.

Jenny Harris, fund raiser at Jerry Green Dog Rescue, said: “We are delighted that Newstead Abbey has come on board to host a Brew Up event during its week-long celebration of man’s best friend!

“Brew Up, Help a Pup is a great excuse for people to catch up with loved ones and enjoy a delicious treat all in the name of a good cause!”

Brew Up Week will officially run from Monday 25th until Saturday 30th May and the charity is urging its supporters to host an event in that week to boost its coffers.

Jenny added: “Whether you’re a coffee lover or a tea drinker we’re asking people who care about animals to ‘paws’ for a brew and do their bit for their local dog rescue centre.

“With operating costs of £1.5 million, the support of local dog lovers is invaluable to help us rescue and re-home even more dogs. It’s surprising the difference a fundraising cuppa can really make!”

Supporters wanting to host their own event can register for a fundraising pack from Jerry Green Dog Rescue by calling 01652 650886 or sending an email to fundraising@jerrygreendogs.org.uk.

Notes to editors:

Jerry Green Dog Rescue was founded in 1961 in Broughton, Lincolnshire and is now one of the UK’s largest dog rescue charities.
• Jerry Green Dog Rescue has a caring ethos which puts the dogs in its care at the centre of everything it does. It also operates a policy whereby prospective adopters are introduced to dogs in a neutral environment away from the kennel, resulting in less stress for the dog and increasing the chances of permanent homes being found.
• The adoption process at Jerry Green Dog Rescue involves a number of introductory visits and the rehoming team provide pre and post adoption support to ensure the move to the dog’s new home is as smooth as possible.
• The charity receives no Government or National Lottery funding. This means it is dependent on the generosity of public and corporate donors/sponsors.
