Those who want advice on the farming year ahead or on technology are being encouraged to attend the briefings.

Business Update Will Firm Up Facts For Farmers

Make the most of opportunities available to the sector – that’s the message being delivered ahead of chartered accountants Duncan & Toplis’ annual Farm Business Update, run in partnership with Brown & Co.

Having run agricultural updates for the last 30 years, Duncan & Toplis is this year encouraging farmers and those involved in business related to agriculture to think outside the box.

Experts in renewables and farming technology will be among those speaking at the firm’s event on Wednesday 3rd February at Greetham Valley Golf Club, near Oakham at 8.30am and at the Petwood Hotel, Woodhall Spa at 2pm.

These include Professor Simon Blackmore, Head of Engineering at Harper Adams University, who will be speaking on agricultural robotics.

Duncan & Toplis Director Mark Chatterton said: “More and more of our clients are becoming interested in robotics. The savings that can be made in this area are huge as it saves on outlay like labour costs, but also practical elements like soil compaction on farmland. Professor Blackmore has been developing this technology and will be able to advise those attending the update.”

Mark explained that more than half of Duncan & Toplis’ agricultural clients have invested in renewable energy over the past few years and adds that, with time to prepare, farmers can take advantage of opportunities available within their own business.

“A lot of our clients have invested in expansions in wind, solar and other technologies related to government subsidies, but the potential is there for many more to join them,” he said.

Sean Cameron and Peter Masterson of General Energy Management (GEM) will also be speaking at the event, outlining the potential for those interested in exploring renewable energy options.

Mark added: “2016 looks to be a year where commodity prices for farming will remain low, so now is the time to look into other avenues of income and resilience for the year ahead.”
