Charity Calls for Action on Dog Collars

Dog-lovers are being urged to sign an online petition to help save dogs from harmful collars that use unnecessary force.

Jerry Green Dog Rescue is supporting the appeal to ban the use and sale of prong or pinch collars, spray collars, choke chains and shock collars for use on animals.

There are no regulations in place and their use is completely legal but they can cause asphyxiation, neurological problems, crushing of the trachea and severe bruising.

The online petition has already reached over 8,000 signatures but requires over 100,000 to be considered for discussion in government.

“The use of these collars is completely unnecessary and can cause serious physical damage and physiological problems for the dog, which some owners may not be aware of,” said Rosie Myers, Behaviour Advisor for Jerry Green Dog Rescue.

“At Jerry Green Dog Rescue we strongly discourage the use of these collars and do not consider them safe or effective training tools – there are always better ways to train your dog. Some people think they’re an acceptable training tool and the collars are sold in shops and on the internet, but studies show their use has a negative impact on a dog’s behaviour, as well as causing physical harm.

“Dogs learn to fear their owner which can lead to aggression towards people and other animals. We recommend training through positive reinforcement, such as rewarding good behaviour – it does work.

“You can help to make a difference and stop the unfair treatment of dogs: sign the petition today and help to ban the use and sale of these barbaric dog collars.”

There are two types of dog collar: choke or prong collars which have sharp prongs on the inner and shock collars which can be bark-activated, remotely activated by the owner or activated by a fenced area.

Notes to editors:

Jerry Green Dog Rescue was founded in 1961 in Broughton, Lincolnshire and is now one of the UK’s largest dog rescue charities. It has rescue centres in five locations:

• Gilberdyke, East Yorkshire
• Blidworth near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire
• Broughton near Brigg, North Lincolnshire
• Algarkirk near Boston, Lincolnshire
• Thirsk, North Yorkshire

Jerry Green Dog Rescue has a caring ethos which puts the dogs in its care at the centre of everything it does. It also operates a policy whereby prospective adopters are introduced to dogs in a neutral environment away from the kennel, resulting in less stress for the dog and increasing the chances of permanent homes being found.

The adoption process at Jerry Green Dog Rescue involves a number of introductory visits and the rehoming team provide pre and post adoption support to ensure the move to the dog’s new home is as smooth as possible.

The charity receives no Government or National Lottery funding. This means it is dependent on the generosity of public and corporate donors/sponsors.
