Charity’s Plea for Rescue Dog Foster Carers

Nine-year-old rescue dog Barney Bat-ears finds kennel life very stressful and desperately needs a foster home – can you help?

Jerry Green Dog Rescue is looking for foster carers who can temporarily rehome and care for rescue dogs like Barney Bat-ears that suffer from stress and anxiety in kennels, until they find a forever home.

Barney Bat-ears is currently being cared for at the charity’s East Yorkshire centre in Gilberdyke. However, Jerry Green Dog Rescue is hoping to recruit foster carers across its five centres in Lincolnshire, Nottingham and Yorkshire to care for dogs that find it hard to adjust to kennel life, older dogs, dogs with health conditions, pregnant bitches and their puppies

“Dogs like Barney Bat-ears find kennel life very stressful, and while we do all we can to make the stay for dogs as comfortable as possible across all our centres some dogs need a bit of extra care and support,” said Shelley Wooding, Head of Welfare and Development at Jerry Green Dog Rescue.

“We desperately need willing foster carers to come forward and care for dogs that need that bit of extra love and attention while we work to find them a forever home. Many people can’t have a dog full time, but can part time. For instance, people who are retired and do a lot of travelling, but would be willing to share their home with a dog, are perfect for fostering.”

Sheila from Mansfield would love a dog of her own but isn’t in a position to have one of her own at the present, so fostering is the next best option. She is currently fostering Buddy from the charity’s Nottingham centre, near Blidworth.

“Fostering a dog is great for companionship and perfect if you can’t have your own dog; I live on my own so it’s great to have Buddy around,” she said.

“I regularly keep in touch with the staff at the centre so they know how he’s getting on and arrange visits for any potential adopters. They provide Buddy’s food, dog bowls, lead and his bed. Any vets bills are taken care of and they supply his worm tablets too.

“Buddy had been in kennels for a while so I had to be patient with him before he settled in. He did need a bit of extra support but now he’s comfortable he is really good. I would love him to have a home with his own garden so he can run around. I know he isn’t mine and I’ll miss him when he goes, but I want to help him enjoy his life and it’s better for him to be with me for the time being rather than in kennels.” Sheila added.

Shelley Wooding added: “We have been trialling the fostering of dogs on a smaller scale and it’s proved really successful so we’re really excited about expanding the scheme further. Fostering allows us to improve the care we can offer to rescue dogs while giving people who cannot permanently adopt a dog the chance to care for a dog, without the financial and long-term commitment.

“Ideally we’re looking for people who have a lot of time on their hands and have experience looking after dogs. If you’re interested in becoming a foster carer contact your nearest centre for information on how to apply.”

Notes to editors:
Jerry Green Dog Rescue was founded in 1961 in Broughton, Lincolnshire and is now one of the UK’s largest dog rescue charities. It has rescue centres in five locations:

• Gilberdyke, East Yorkshire
• Blidworth near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire
• Broughton near Brigg, North Lincolnshire
• Algarkirk near Boston, Lincolnshire
• Thirsk, North Yorkshire

Jerry Green Dog Rescue has a caring ethos which puts the dogs in its care at the centre of everything it does. It also operates a policy whereby prospective adopters are introduced to dogs in a neutral environment away from the kennel, resulting in less stress for the dog and increasing the chances of permanent homes being found.

The adoption process at Jerry Green Dog Rescue involves a number of introductory visits and the rehoming team provide pre and post adoption support to ensure the move to the dog’s new home is as smooth as possible.

The charity receives no Government or National Lottery funding. This means it is dependent on the generosity of public and corporate donors/sponsors.
