Dog Lovers Mourn Charity Stalwart

Animal lovers around the country are mourning the death of Jerry Green Dog Rescue‘s founding trustee Peggy Dornom, who has died aged 91 at her home in Wrawby, North Lincolnshire.

Miss Dornom gave her life to the cause of abandoned and unwanted dogs for more than 50 years. Working with businessman Jerry Green, she founded a state-of-the-art sanctuary at Wressle, near Brigg in North Lincolnshire, which is still the centre of operations for Jerry Green Dog Rescue – now one of the UK’s largest dog charities.

She was at the gate in 1961 to welcome the first stray to the centre and continued to play an active role within Jerry Green Dog Rescue until the day she died. Thanks to Miss Dornom and her devoted staff, thousands of dogs have found caring new homes and thousands of people have discovered the pleasures of adopting a rescue dog.

Known affectionately as ‘Miss D’, her mantra was that out there somewhere is a home for every dog, and every animal in the charity’s care is just waiting for the right person to come along. But Miss Dornom was not a sentimentalist; her firm, no-nonsense but fair-minded approach earned her the respect of all the staff at the charity’s centres across Lincolnshire, Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire.

While officially holding the title of Honorary Chairman and Treasurer of the Board of Trustees for 40 years, Miss Dornom’s role encompassed so much more than chairing meetings and managing the finances.

Jerry Green Dog Rescue chairman Ian Cawsey said: “Miss Dornom actually ran the whole organisation on a day-to-day basis until she was well into her 80s, turning up to her spartan office each morning. It was a standing joke that the dogs, in their heated kennels, were more comfortable than the trustees shivering through board meetings!

“She was not just a wonderfully savvy businesswoman, she was also an extremely kind person who will be loved, remembered and missed by many.”

Originally from Devon, Miss Dornom was also for many years a trustee of Margaret Green Animal Rescue, based near Bournemouth.

A funeral service will take place at 10am on Friday 23rd January at Scunthorpe Crematorium. Family flowers only have been requested but donations may be made to Jerry Green Dog Rescue.
