The Fun Dog Show will be held at Newstead Abbey

Historic House Hosts Summer Fete

The historic Newstead Abbey in Nottinghamshire is hosting its first ever two-day traditional summer fete on August bank holiday weekend.

Visitors will be able to enjoy outdoor summer games in the picturesque grounds and explore the house, which was once home to the great romantic poet Lord Byron, on Sunday 24th and Monday 25th August between 11am and 4pm.

Jerry Green Dog Rescue will host its popular Fun Dog Show at the event on Sunday 24th August. Owners are being invited to bring their dog along to the event and enter one of eight classes including most handsome dog, dog that looks most like its owner and best junior dog handler.

Registration for the Fun Dog Show starts at 11.30am and are only £1 per category, per dog; the Best in Show winners will be announced at 3pm. All proceeds will go towards the rescue charity’s Nottingham centre build appeal.

Horse and carriage tours will take place around the grounds on Monday 25th August and both days will also include craft stalls from local artists and jewellery makers, cake stalls, refreshments and a teddy bears picnic.

“We’re really excited to be involved in the traditional summer fete at the beautiful Newstead Abbey,” said Sapphire McInnes, Centre Manager for Jerry Green Dog Rescue.

“We have been unable to hold a summer show at our Nottingham centre in Blidworth due to the extensive building work that is currently taking place to modernise and expand our centre, so we’re really grateful to be involved in this event to help raise vital funds for this project.

“People who want to make a contribution towards the build can do so either at the centre on Warsop Lane or through our Just Giving page: https://www.justgiving.com/NottsBuildAppeal.

Cara Simmonds, Commercial Development Officer for Nottingham City Council, also commented: “We hold a number of events at Newstead Abbey, but this is the first time we have held a two-day traditional summer fete and we’re delighted that Jerry Green Dog Rescue will be joining us.

“We hope that visitors will bring their dogs to the event and take part in Sunday’s Fun Dog Show. Please keep them on a lead and respect the site.

“If you’re coming with friends or family there’s plenty of traditional games including croquet, hook-a-duck and giant Connect 4. The house has stunning medieval cloisters, Victorian rooms and there is a café to relax in too.

“Parking is available on site for £6 per car, payable on the day. There are public transport routes to Newstead Abbey, but please be aware that the walk to the site is a mile long.”

The event is taking place at Newstead Abbey Historic House & Park, Ravenshead, Newstead, Nottinghamshire, NG15 8NA.

Notes to editors:
Jerry Green Dog Rescue was founded in 1961 in Broughton, Lincolnshire and is now one of the UK’s largest dog rescue charities. It has rescue centres in five locations:

• Gilberdyke, East Yorkshire
• Blidworth near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire
• Broughton near Brigg, North Lincolnshire
• Algarkirk near Boston, Lincolnshire
• Thirsk, North Yorkshire

Jerry Green Dog Rescue has a caring ethos which puts the dogs in its care at the centre of everything it does. It also operates a policy whereby prospective adopters are introduced to dogs in a neutral environment away from the kennel, resulting in less stress for the dog and increasing the chances of permanent homes being found.

The adoption process at Jerry Green Dog Rescue involves a number of introductory visits and the rehoming team provide pre and post adoption support to ensure the move to the dog’s new home is as smooth as possible.

The charity receives no Government or National Lottery funding. This means it is dependent on the generosity of public and corporate donors/sponsors.
