Kitty Litter Saved by Dog Charity

Staff at a leading dog charity temporarily swapped canines for cats to help 20 kittens without a home.

Jerry Green Dog Rescue usually looks after dogs but didn’t miss the chance to help when its centre near Brigg was notified of 20 newborn kittens that needed immediate help.

The charity was alerted to the situation by North Lincolnshire Council’s environmental team and was given no background information or details about the kittens’ previous owners.

In a bid to help, dedicated staff at the North Lincolnshire centre went over and above their usual doggy duties to find an alternative rescue organisation for the tiny cats.

Once the kittens were given the all clear by the vet, staff from the dog charity safely transported them to the specialist rescue organisations in North Lincolnshire who were able to look after them. They are now being nursed and cared for until they are ready to be rehomed.

“While we are a rehoming centre dedicated to dogs, we are all animal lovers and tried our best to help support the local council with the kittens who had found themselves without a mother and badly in need of care,” said Rosie Myers, Behavioural Advisor at Jerry Green Dog Rescue.

“We were happy to support on this one-off occasion but would urge anyone finding cats or kittens to call their local Cats Protection who will be able to offer specialist advice and support. It certainly made a change to our day to be helping cats instead of dogs!”

Notes to editors:

Jerry Green Dog Rescue was founded in 1961 in Broughton, Lincolnshire and is now one of the UK’s largest dog rescue charities. It has rescue centres in five locations:

• Gilberdyke, East Yorkshire
• Blidworth near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire
• Broughton near Brigg, North Lincolnshire
• Algarkirk near Boston, Lincolnshire
• Thirsk, North Yorkshire

Jerry Green Dog Rescue has a caring ethos which puts the dogs in its care at the centre of everything it does. It also operates a policy whereby prospective adopters are introduced to dogs in a neutral environment away from the kennel, resulting in less stress for the dog and increasing the chances of permanent homes being found.

The adoption process at Jerry Green Dog Rescue involves a number of introductory visits and the rehoming team provide pre and post adoption support to ensure the move to the dog’s new home is as smooth as possible.

The charity receives no Government or National Lottery funding. This means it is dependent on the generosity of public and corporate donors/sponsors.
