Ricky and Ryan Have Their Eyes on the Prize at Brands Hatch

The final round of the British F1 Sidecar Championship is taking place this weekend at Brands Hatch and Team Ricky and Ryan is within arm’s reach of the title.

Sidecar driver Ricky Stevens, from Portsmouth, and his passenger Ryan Charlwood, from Dover, will be heading to the Kent circuit with one goal: to secure their championship title for the second year running.

Ricky and Ryan currently lead the championship by 47 points over five-time world champions Tim Reeves and Gregory Cluze. Though this advantage gives them a comfortable lead heading into the finals, it does not guarantee them the title yet and so they still have everything to race for.

Ryan said: “Quite frankly we would have liked to be in a more secure position at this stage of the championship but 2016 has been full of challenges for us. Considering all that’s happened, a 47-point lead is a pretty good achievement.

“As per tradition, the final round counts for double points so there are potentially 50 points available at Brands. That definitely puts the pressure on us to perform well if we want to be champions again this year.”

The team has certainly had an eventful season. As well as Ryan sustaining a shoulder injury during round 3 at Knockhill, the pair have suffered numerous technical issues with their outfit. However, they have achieved podium finishes at every single round so far which is what has given them the advantage they have now.

Ricky said: “Finally it has all come down to this. We will need to consider every single move carefully this weekend.

“Obviously we always race to win, that is just our competitive nature, but we also have the title within our line of sight this weekend and we plan to keep our eyes firmly on the prize.”

Notes to editors:

  • They raced to victory in the 2015 championship for team AOS/Be Wiser with Ricky Stevens, from Portsmouth, as driver and Ryan Charlwood, from Dover, as co-rider.
  • In 2015, they also beat the world champions by four seconds, effectively making them the best F1 sidecar racing team in the world at present.
  • For the 2016 season, Ricky and Ryan have joined the Quattro Plant Cool Kawasaki team. The newly sponsored team has a new livery and the backing from Bournemouth Kawasaki. The Quattro Plant Cool team also includes British Superbike riders Luke Mossey and Filip Backlund and Supersport rider Andy Reid.
