Signage Lights the Way to Candles Charity Boutique

Allen Signs, which has offices in North Hykeham near Lincoln and Nottingham, has helped to put a charity shop on the map by providing the signage for free.

Cancer charity Candles, which raises money to fund pioneering research by Professor Oleg Eremin at Lincoln County Hospital, has been leased a shop by the Lincolnshire Cooperative Society on Waterside South in Lincoln.

After being approached by a mutual friend, Managing Director David Allen offered to help Candles’ founders Pam Connock and Dyllys Firth by designing and making the shop signage, window graphics and advertising board free of charge.

“I was quite surprised to find out about Professor Eremin and his ground-breaking research into a new type of cancer treatment as you don’t think that level of work is going on right here in Lincolnshire,” explained David.

“Cancer affects so many families including my own and I was only too happy to support Candles as I think Pam and Dyllys have done amazingly well raising over £750,000. It’s an incredible achievement and I hope having a shop will help them to collect even more money.”

Pam and Dyllys from Skellingthorpe set up Candles as a fund-raising charity in 2001 after undergoing treatment for the disease.

Their aim is to raise £1 million to fund Professor Eremin’s research into immunotherapy – an alternative cancer treatment that uses the body’s immune system to fight disease rather than treatments such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

Commenting on the new shop, Pam said: “We’re so grateful to Allen Signs and everyone who helped us to set up our first ever shop. The Co-op is charging us hardly anything to lease the premises and we’ve had lots of help from previous shop owners and tradespeople to fit it out.

“David and the team have produced eye-catching designs and the signage helps us to look really professional. Several customers have asked us who did it for us and we wouldn’t have been able to afford to pay for the work they’ve done so I can’t thank them enough.

“We’ve also had an excellent response from members of the public who have donated a lot of high-quality designer ladies clothes, which is why we’ve decided to call it the Candles Charity Boutique!

“We’ve always wanted a shop and this is a great way for us to test the water without having to spend a lot of money.”
