Wild Dog Chase Ends With Railway Rescue

A vulnerable dog without a home has been rescued from train tracks, minutes before a train was due, by staff at Jerry Green Dog Rescue.

Staff from the East Yorkshire centre responded to calls from worried residents who had seen a German Shepherd dog with a limp appearing lost and thin in Gilberdyke.

After numerous attempts to entice the dog out of the cold and wet weather, staff made a final rescue on the second day of trying.

Jerry Green Dog Rescue carefully approached the dog in the Gilberdyke area before she ran onto the Hull to Goole railway line, minutes before the next train was due.

Very concerned for the dog’s safety as she remained on the tracks with an approaching train, staff managed to use dog food to encourage her away from danger.

“We’d almost completely given up hope of being able to catch her,” said Denise Browne, Deputy Manager at Jerry Green Dog Rescue in East Yorkshire. “After trailing through fields, down roads and near the railway track we were very worried for her safety.

“We were relieved that she had come off the rail track but she began heading towards the main road. Driving down the road slowly, we managed to get close enough to offer her some food. Finally she approached us and happily jumped into the van so we could take her back to the centre and care for her.

“Since arriving at our centre she has settled in well and we have named her Annie. She needs plenty of food as she is quite thin at the moment. Although she’s only been here for a short while she is well loved by all the staff.”

Annie is a sable long-haired German Shepherd dog about eight to 10 years old. She is fairly timid at the moment but interacts well with other dogs.

She will be available for re-homing in a few months. Contact the centre at 01430 449112.

• The adoption process at Jerry Green Dog Rescue involves a number of introductory visits and the rehoming team provide pre and post adoption support to ensure the move to the dog’s new home is as smooth as possible.

• The charity receives no Government or National Lottery funding. This means it is dependent on the generosity of public and corporate donors/sponsors.
